Not just to see if we could do it without passports; we had an objective. Niagara Falls!  It was a leisurely one-week road trip, through the UP on the way out, right across Lake Michigan on the way back. There were a few glitches (like being unable to find our passports before we left) but everything worked out. Our goals were modest, which made it easy to exceed expectations at every turn. 

I was delighted to discover that the Fallsview Embassy Suites really was as good as it sounds! The location couldn't have been more perfect, and here's the view from our room on the 38th floor. Yowza!

Did not hit the Mystery Spot, but we DID stop at the steakhouse you recommended in Escanaba. You're right, the steak was great! Thanks for the tip. And it gave us a goal for the first 4 hours of driving. Other than that we just drove straight through the UP as fast as we could because it was our longest driving day. A little too fast, in fact; Richard got stopped for speeding. The young cop who pulled us over let him off with a warning (R probably reminded him of his whiskery old Grandpa), but that put us even more behind schedule. We were trying to get to the Mackinaw Bridge before dark. We actually arrived just after sunset, in time to appreciate the view from the bridge, but just barely.

We can compare notes on Mackinaw City, though!

That is indeed a great view of the Falls. Could you hear them at all? (World's largest white noise generator, there.)
