The van got totalled last night. Nobody got hurt and it was the other driver's fault. That's the good news. The bad news (besides the full tank of gas) is that the other driver had no insurance. Also no driver's license. And quite possibly no immigration papers, but that's just speculation.

We're looking for a replacement in the under-$5000 range. We only had liability on the old one, so it's all out of pocket. All things being equal, we'd just as soon buy another Grand Caravan/Voyager, as Richard has it all figured out how to pack his light show into that space. We'd like something a little newer, preferably 1996 or later, esp. if we can find one with the fold-under rear seats. Anybody got any tips?

Incidentally, in case you were wondering, Chevy trucks really ARE like a rock.

Sorry to hear that; glad no one was hurt.

It has been a bad season for cars, it seems. Em has a new, sporty, tricked-out ... I'm blanking, but it's a Toyota model, and also had a beater Honda to drive back and forth to work and put the miles on. In February, the Honda was stolen and the Toyota was backed into while it was parked.

I'm glad everybody is okay. And I hope you find a new van that suits you. Or at least has a different set of annoying habits.

P.

Oy, that's terrible. I am so sorry to hear it.

What happened with the other driver? Police called or what?

K. [PS: I just found out about open skating in the Andover YMCA for like 2 or 3 dollars a session. It's not close to anything but Lisa's house]

Thank you...

... for putting the very important "nobody got hurt," information early, rather than late. (Although, given your headline, I'd expected that that would be the case.)

I've had good luck with carsoup.com, and know other people who have. My first step, though, would be to call Greg Cotton. He seems to be a clearinghouse, at times, for people wanting to get rid of decent cars.

I'm glad to hear that everyone is OK. This has been a bad year for fans and car accidents! I hope your search for a replacement van goes smoothly.

What a bummer!

Hey, want to buy Mike's old van? You kept saying it was just like yours, complete with rust on top, cranky doors, and leaking oil like a sieve.

Well, maybe not.

We just sprang for a new Honda Odyssey.

Good luck on getting a replacement!

May the other driver have the kind of luck he deserves.

Oh, arrghh, indeed. When I was hit by a non-licensed driver, he was hauled away in a squad, his car was impounded and his three friends had to walk the rest of the way to work. Glad no one was hurt and hope your search for a replacement is swift and fruitful.

Thank goodness no one (and especially not Thorin) was hurt!

(Carolyn and I are hanging out with him this evening. He seems completely unshaken.)

Glad to hear that no one got hurt. As to car buying advise, you're asking me!?
