This is what your AC filter is supposed to look like

The big AC is putting out cold air again! Yay! I have also cleaned 5 more filters and sent Thorin a nagging email about the one in his room.

DON’T BE ME!! Clean your filters!

Hee. I get very paranoid whenever the little "Check Filter" light goes on and drop everything to clean the filter in question; this tendency is aided by the light on my bedroom air conditioner, which is a violent red blob rather like the Eye of Sauron. ONE MUST OBEY.

I also got a brush and a comb for the fins, which restored the function of my bedroom air conditioner when it wasn't able to cool my room after the neighbors cut all the trees down. The brush is really a brush and gets off accreted fluff and dirt; the comb I haven't used but it allegedly will straighten out bent fins. I don't happen to have any so far.

I'm a rather unlikely candidate as an expert in the maintenance of window air conditioners.

I found the set on Amazon when I was looking for some foam strips to replace some that had turned to dust -- those strips they give you with an air conditioner to fill up the gap between the stationary upper sash and the raised lower sash. There's always more than you need but not enough to fill the small space twice. The variation is probably meant to fit various sizes of window rather than provide a replacement.

I might even have a second set -- I think for some reason they came in sets of two. I was going to give that second set to downstairs, but there's no reason you can't borrow it first.

I've been too timid to use the fin comb, feeling that if it can straighten fins I am just the person to mistakenly bend them instead. The brush is softer than the comb but it's fairly stiff. You can experiment.
