And while we’re at it, what is this?

Whatever it is, it seems to be catnip for bees. Milwaukie, the Portland suburb where the family actually lives, seems to have a robust population of honeybees, unlike South Minneapolis. Maybe if everybody had this stuff in their yard it would help?

The pic isn't clear enough for me to guess what that western plant is. Is it growing near a squash plant? What do the seeds look like? And what do the leaves look like?

Probably it gets a lot of bees because someone is keeping bees nearby.
