And while we’re at it, what is this?
Whatever it is, it seems to be catnip for bees. Milwaukie, the Portland suburb where the family actually lives, seems to have a robust population of honeybees, unlike South Minneapolis. Maybe if everybody had this stuff in their yard it would help?

Probably it gets a lot of bees because someone is keeping bees nearby.

Might be beekeepers, but might be wild bees, which are apparently fairly plentiful in Oregon. A few years ago there was a huge, thriving bee colony in a dead tree a few blocks away from here IN SOMEONE'S FRONT YARD. While I am theoretically concerned about the plight of the honeybee I don't think I would be chill enough to let wild bees nest 15 feet from my front porch. Yikes. That bee tree is gone now, for whatever reason, but there still seem to be plenty of bees in the neighborhood.
