Like most fat people, I hate hot weather, especially hot and muggy weather. I'm usually the first to whine and complain and refuse to go outdoors. But the hot spells this year haven't bothered me much. Of course it helps that we have a very efficient window AC in our bedroom, so sleeping hasn't been a problem.

But I've been biking perfectly happily when the temps are in the high 80s and low 90s. The hot sun still bothers me, but on morning rides to work when the path is shaded, or evening rides home with the sun going down, I've been perfectly comfortable. I've been figuring it's because of the pseudo-breeze generated by the moving bike. But on Saturday, with temps in the 90's, I spent 5 or 6 hours in the backyard painting the picnic tables. The only time I really got too hot was when I was in full sun.

I wonder if physical exertion in hot weather (i.e., the biking) actually triggers a physiological change that makes heat more tolerable? It seems that way.

Nonetheless, I wasn't nuts enough to bike to work today! When the ambient temperature rises above 98.6, I agree that it is just too hot to move, and thank God for air conditioning. I'm planning on riding on Tuesday and Friday of this week, assuming the temps really do drop a bit.

I don't recall that I liked heat any better when I was 75 pounds lighter, and generally considered to be skinny. In fact I probably got into computers so deeply partly because they provided the only air-conditioned space I had access to the year I started programming them. Especially that summer.
