My big, beautiful 21" Dell monitor!! Yesterday it was fine. Today...it's all wiggly around the edges. Very wiggly. Getting worse by the minute. I don't think it's long for this world. How can this be? It's only... um... 6 years old? Yikes. Anybody got a monitor to give away?

Anybody got a monitor to give away?

Probably. There is an extra here in the office right now, I need to first make sure that it isn't already spoken for somewhere else in the house. I will probably know by tomorrow night or so, assuming that I remember to ask.

If not, [livejournal.com profile] geohard had a rental tenant leave behind a metric shitload of electronics, including about fifty monitors, about two thirds of them worked fine.

Wow! Let me know. The bigger the better, of course. :-)

I may just go out and buy a cool new flat panel one, but it would be nice to have something to use while I think about it...

We only use laptops. I gave away my last monitor years ago.

But if you have to buy one, they're cheap...unless you want a large one.

I want one at least as big as the one I have now, which I think is 21" (measuring the old diagonal CRT tube way). Is that still considered large?

However, if somebody has a smaller one they want to give away, I wouldn't mind having a decent spare in the house for times like this.

Thanks for the tip. I have, in fact, considered getting a wide-screen LCD when it was time to replace this good old (Dell) monitor.

I've got a nice ViewSonic monitor I'm not using.

Oops. Reading more carefully; this is only 17"

My 21" Iiyama died a couple of months ago. My secondary Sony 17" may have just died -- I have a *little* more debugging to do before I conclude that, but it's looking likely. Grumble!

6 years is a good life for a monitor. My 21" was in the 6 to 8 range, and I feel it's lasted longer than I really had a right to count on.

I'm experimenting with a (sort-of graphics grade) LCD to replace the big monitor, and it's not too bad, though it's certainly not as good as the monitor was. But it's a $300 19" LCD, not the $500 or $800 19" LCDs, which are better. A lot better than the $150 19" you see at Best Buy, though.

This is probably a dumb question, but can I use an LCD tv as a computer monitor? I bought a 19" medium-high-definition LCD tv, and shortly afterward someone gave me a great big old-fashioned tv that we are now using. So the cute little LCD screen is just lying on its back in a corner.

Some of them, sometimes, you can, I think. This is reading-the-net knowledge, not personal experience, so be cautious!

And in the 21" range, I'd be shocked if the vertical resolution was less than 1500 or 1280 at the very least -- and the best HD TV resolution is only 1080, and that's mostly found on MUCH bigger (and pricier) displays.

I got my Hitachi SuperScan Supreme 803, which is a pretty old 19" (I think) from the Box Shop. They have branches around the Twin Cities, and the prices are very cheap -- I think I got my monitor for $50. It's still working quite well.
