I discovered LJ Memories today and I've been cataloguing my life. I screwed up at first, not realizing that the keyword list had to be separated by commas, not spaces, so I had to go back and correct my first dozen entries. Then I started scrolling backwards through the last year or so of my postings and discovered that they are more interesting in restrospect than I thought they would be when I made them. It turns out to be especially interesting to reread entries about:

  • Outings to plays, movies, museums, restaurants, parties, etc.

  • Comments on the weather (who would have thought?)

  • Computer games

  • Shopping

Not especially interesting to reread:

  • comments on current events or politics

  • whining

  • illness and injuries (although I'm trying to keep track for historical purposes)

Anybody else doing this? What topics do you like to track?

And is there any fast way to get from the Recent Entries listing to the screen where you add the keywords?

Are you doing Memories or Tags? In my experience, they both work reasonably well to get back to, but Tags are easier to add - there's a window on the post screen to fill in tags, and under Profile, Edit Tags, you can see a list, pick one and click on it. Some themes have your tags on either the Friends Page or Journal Page, which makes them quick to find.

I'm doing memories. I find it quite confusing that there seem to be two unrelated sets of tags: the tags you add in memories and the other tags. LJ seems to be addicted to the overloading of terms.

I occasionally look back over my astronomy posts, and less often over other things.

I use both memories and tags. I note that I've been putting less items in memories now that I've started using tags.

My memory categories are:

Cheering Charms: 5 entries
Depression: 9 entries
Emergency preparation: 1 entry
Family: 134 entries
Food: 28 entries
Found objects: 1 entry
Frugality: 12 entries
Gay civil rights: 8 entries
Harry Potter: 36 entries
Harry Potter: Nocturne Alley: 6 entries
Healthy living: 1 entry
Holy Tree: 1 entry
I've been thinking about this: 40 entries
Just for fun: 46 entries
Karate: 59 entries
Katrina: 1 entry
LOTR: 31 entries
LOTR fanfic: 3 entries
LOTR icons: 11 entries
Layout: 2 entries
Life List: 4 entries
Light in dark places: 4 entries
Lists: 3 entries
Livejournal: 9 entries
May Day: 6 entries
Promotion: 1 entry
Snapshots: 26 entries
Speaking up for Tolerance: 5 entries
Take your daughter to work day: 4 entries

How are tags different than Memories? What makes you decide to use one over the other?

If you "tag" something, it creates a hyperlink. So then when you click on that tag, it takes you to ALL the entries (just like a friends page listing) with that tag. So if I want to see my entries tagged "karate" it will show them all. If you put something under the memory "karate" you can get a list of post titles under that subject, and each post title is a hyperlink which, if you click on it, takes you to just that one individual entry.

They both have their uses.

One limitation: (I think) that if you tag something, it will only show the last fifty entries with that tag if you click the tag hyperlink. If you've used that tag more than fifty times, then you will have to go back and hunt manually for the older ones. Or use the memories feature.

I try to put anything in Memories that I may want to find again, as reference for a creative idea, or whatever. I often forget to do it, though. I need to go back every once in a while and check for things I want in memories.
