Here are your orders, should you choose to accept them: Make a Mix CD of music about DRINKING, in standard CD format and bring several copies to Marscon to share with other participants. In exchange, you will recieve copies of other people's chosen selection of drinking songs.
I'm not sure if I'm even going to Marscon, but this sounded like a great way to piddle away a weekend. So I sat down with my iTunes and started putting together a mix of songs on the subject of Drinking. OMG, did that ever turn out great! After the first pass I had 28 songs, which I loaded onto my iPod shuffle and listened to while I was skating, an amazingly successful combination. Drinking songs tend to be lively, whether they're rock'n'roll, bluegrass, show tunes, or opera. And yes, there's some of each on in this mix, although I must admit there's more country than any other single category (what can you do? the topic is DRINKING.)
I'm now trying to finalize the song order and then I'll see if I can figure out how to burn a CD from iTunes.
Assuming that I get that to work, I'll be happy to make copies for people, preferably in exchange for your own mix.

Date: 2007-01-23 08:11 pm (UTC)There's the "cheat" option - Carmina Burana. Other than that, it's probably some Austin Lounge Lizards (would "100 Miles of Dry" count? it's more about not drinking...), maybe a Fred Small or Peter Mayer. My music library is strongly classical, with small amounts of classic rock and folk tossed in.

Date: 2007-01-22 04:02 am (UTC)Indeed. One of the hard parts of a mix tape is editing it down to just the songs that are great and/or the songs that flow. The two drinking mixes I made for the owner of the bar across the street, mentioned in mle292's original post, have some stretches, but worked out fine.
I'll take a free one! But you should come to Marscon anyway.

Date: 2007-01-22 06:07 pm (UTC)Yeah. I ended up taking out one song that fit the theme perfectly "Red Wine at Noon," because it was too slow and whiny, and broke the momentum. I like the song in its natural setting (in the middle of a Joy of Cooking album), but it just didn't seem to work with these songs. I also removed "Sonora's Death Row," although it's a great song, because it was just too much of a downer. I figured I had enough songs on consequences of drinking without including hanging offenses.
I looked at both of your song lists, and we have one overlap (2 if you count the same song performed by different people). Care to guess what the overlap might be, knowing the kinds of albums we both own?
I must admit, I WOULD like copies of both of your CDs, although I certainly owe you a CD or two. Bring extras and I'll buy them from you if you like. :-)

Date: 2007-01-22 07:31 pm (UTC)Hmm... a challenge. "Were All These Beer Cans Here Last Night?" is from an album Richard gave me, so I'm reasonably sure you don't have a copy any more. Many possibilities, but if I had to pick one it would be "Will His Love Be Like His Rum? "

It's a deal. I'll run off a bunch for the con.
