With thanks to [personal profile] asakiyume , who provided some helpful tips for navigating Dreamwidth's egregiously terrible user interface, I think I have finally figured out how to upload a picture and embed it in a post without ever having to type a line of HTML. This involves navigating among 3 different image handling pages hidden deep within the DW website, figuring out that "Image Code" on one of these pages is the same thing as "Thumbnail Embed" on a different page (i.e., not the code you want), and figuring out which two of the three annotation fields are important because they will be included in the generated link. It also involves resizing the picture before starting because there is no way to resize it once it is uploaded and it will break your webpage if you try to embed a picture that is too big. Once you have figured out which generated code you want, of course, you then have to paste it into the HTML editor.

And then it works. But it did not have to be this difficult. Just using the same terminology from one page to the next would have made it so much easier. Steps below the picture. I'm mostly doing this for my own benefit because I'm sure I will forget how to do this, but it should be helpful to others as well.

HOW TO UPLOAD AND EMBED A PICTURE from your computer.
  1. Resize picture. [This one is 640x480]
  2. Create -> Upload Images      (Drag and drop or browse)
  3. Annotate picture.  Short description becomes alt text.
  4. SAVE.  You will not be reminded before you leave this page.
  5. Click link at top of page:  "View all your images"
  6. Copy the "Image Embed" HTML code
  7. Post a new entry
  8. Switch to HTML window and paste in your image code.
  9. Switch back to Rich Text to edit the rest of your entry (unless you love coding in HTML)

FOR IMAGES LARGER THAN 1024 x 768, DO THIS INSTEAD (thumbnail with link)

  2. Annotate picture.  Short description becomes alt text.

  4. Copy "Image Code"
  5. Paste into HTML edit window and so on
This is a picture from the window of our fanciest hotel from our 2015 visit to Hawaii. This was a trip built almost entirely on credit card rewards, starting with 2 nights at the almost embarrassingly luxurious Fairmont Orchid. The accommodations went downhill continuously from there but were still pretty nice, even the dumpy B&B near Volcano National Park where we finished up. Great trip. This picture is 3264 x 2448 px  The size is displayed only on the "Your Images" page in the DW gallery. At least that's how the page is labeled once you get there. The link to it is labeled "View All Your Images" and can only be accessed by traversing the mostly useless "Manage Images" page.
