I used to subscribe by calling in during pledge drives and then mailing a check. This was a pain in the neck, so I was glad when everything went online. I didn't have too much trouble signing up as a sustaining member a couple of years ago because it was the road of least resistance on their website. In fact, as it turns out, that is pretty much the ONLY road on the member services portion of their website.
I need to change the credit card that they've been taking the monthly payment from. I kept going back to their website over and over, and couldn't even find a way to view my account! There's a button labeled "Member Services" but that just takes you to the "Pledge Now" page. I followed a number of alternate link paths, but they all ended up in the same place. I tried more than once over a period of a few weeks, thinking it might be in the middle of a site upgrade or something, but it never got better.
I finally went back to my email archives and found a Welcome email that included a link to my account page. This looked promising. I could now see that I was a sustaining member and the last 4 digits of the credit card I wanted to stop using. However, there is no way on this page to change the credit card, or *heaven forbid* STOP the payment! There is, however, a way to start a whole NEW automatic donation by accident while trying to figure out how to stop/change the existing one. Nice. I managed to avoid that pitfall.
I finally found a support email address (also not obvious) and entered my complaint. Three times - it was rejected the first two times for unclear reasons. So by the time I got an email from support informing me that the only way to change my credit card was to call member support before 5pm, I had pretty much had it. I called the damn number and cancelled my membership. Then I got another email from support claiming that "Minnesota Public Radio doesn't have the encryption in place for us to offer Credit/Debit Card management online. " You have got to be kidding me, MPR. You didn't have any problem taking my credit card number in the first place! But now that I know that you don't know how to handle secure information, I'm damned if I'm going to give you another one!
They don't take PayPal. They don't even offer an option to sign up online and then mail in a check. So I guess the only option is to call them on the phone again. Or just say f*ck this and contribute to individual podcasts instead, which is how I do most of my public radio listening these days.
