After a couple of hours poking around online, I realize that I don't exactly want a top of the line video card in my hypothetical new computer. It appears that the high-end video card right now is actually a pair of cards at a total cost of $800-$1000. ooookay. Maybe I'd be happy with the 2nd best video card. Or maybe just ONE of the geForce 8800s.
General Nano does have a nice-looking gaming system on their site that includes a single 8800 for a mere $1350, $1430 with 4G of RAM. They've even packaged it with the machine-killing hot new game Crysis, thereby implying that this system actually has what it takes to play Crysis with the graphics cranked to highest levels (although they don't actually say that). The only thing wrong with it is that there is no way to order it online with XP instead of Vista. I'm guessing that they will sell it with XP, since serious gamers seem to be leading the charge to boycott Vista right now. I sent The General an email asking if they would sell me an XP system.
