Convergence

Convergence was fine. It was pretty much like it always is. I think I'm just getting tired of it. Anyway, the best day of my weekend was Friday, the part where I was putting off going to the con because the weather was so beautiful. Oh well.

There were a few high points, all of them random encounters with people I already knew but now know somewhat better. Maybe it was worth it just for that. Or maybe not. I dunno, I still haven't recovered. And each of the next three weekends has high-intensity people commitments attached to it. At the moment, it all seems too exhausting to contemplate. If I could still bike to work like last year I think I'd feel a whole lot better. I hate Shakopee.

I enjoy CONvergence very much, but I think I would absolutely HATE it if I were in a party room. It would be too noisy and there would be no way to ever retreat from the intensity, which is the best part about having a hotel room.

Have you thought about asking for a 4th floor party room instead?

No, no, the party room is the only thing that makes it possible for me to tolerate such a crowded, noisy over-stimulation factory. The Minicon party is quiet and relaxing (by design). People wander in and out, but they don't surround you, jostle you, shake finger-cymbals in your face or try to make you play Theme Bingo. I'm always happy to see you when you stop in. Making you and [livejournal.com profile] vanaabegra into Turtles was one of those little highlights I mentioned above.

And the con was fine, really. I didn't have a bad time. I just would have preferred spending the rest of the weekend the way I spent most of Friday: outdoors and mostly by myself. I'm not really a very social person, when it comes down to it.

Well, good then. I only mean to say that there are some party rooms on the 4th floor and it's a bit quieter there, but they're also not as frequently visited because they're not in a very visible location.

As always, I really love getting to see you at conventions, the conversations are always thought provoking - even when they're about turtles. ;D

The aggressive nature of some attendees bothers everyone except those few people, I think. I'm most annoyed by the exhibitionists who DEMAND that I be a voyeur. They seem to become less frequent every year - or maybe they're static, the convention is getting bigger, and they're just getting smaller in comparison.

I would not be able to attend a convention that big without a hotel room, sometimes it's calming just to know that there is a place to retreat to, even if one doesn't need it right this minute.

I enjoyed the MiniCon room a lot, and enjoyed seeing you there and chatting a bit. :)

Could you do a park & ride thing to Shakopee? Take your bike in the car to park within a reasonable distance from work, and bike from there?

Seems kind of pointless. The reason I hate Shakopee is because it (or anyway, the part of it that surrounds my workplace) is all highways and sewage treatment plants and railroad yards, punctuated by enormous roadblocks like Valleyfair and Canterbury Downs. I suppose if I really wanted to I could drive past the 15 miles of beautiful commuter trails in Minneapolis, park my car in front of a stranger's house or in some huge parking lot somewhere, and ride along major highways for 5 or 10 miles. But why would I want to do that?

I just want to work in Eden Prairie again where there's a nice bike path that lets me both save gas and enjoy nature.

It sounds like you'd have to park & ride from the other direction: as if you lived at work and were commuting to Minneapolis.

Well, yeah, I guess. If I wanted to leave my car in a Park and Ride lot all night and never use it for anything except driving between work and the parking lot.

Yes; that's the down side, and why I wouldn't expect you to do it on a regular basis.

Wasn't there a fan/artist named Kathy Marschall who came from Shakopee?

Well, the next exit up the road from my place of work is Marschall Road, which I believe is named for her family.

Yes. I haven't heard anything of her in quite a while.
