Ditch Witch is back!
Oct. 24th, 2011 12:12 pmThis morning as I left for work I found USI's Ditch Witch boring a hole under our front lawn to connect the fiber cable. So Step 2 of the new network is done.
Coincidentally, I had to reboot my crappy DSL router twice yesterday to get the Internet connection working. The Internet connection light was on, but the DNS server wasn't propagating. This is not the level of stability I expect from a technology like DSL. I suspect something wrong with the router/modem, but since it works most of the time it's hard to be sure. I'm looking forward to getting free from Qwest. Or Century Link or whatever they're calling it now.

Date: 2011-10-24 07:19 pm (UTC)Actually, the first bump has already happened. USI thought they'd have all this functioning by mid-November, but are encountering permit delays with the new switching station they're building on Garfield. So now the ETA has moved to the last half of December. Which probably means late January, really, because nothing ever gets accomplished in December.
But they seem like a nice, friendly little local company, so eager to be accommodating. All out of the blue they offered me 2 free months of wireless service while I'm waiting for my new direct fiber service, just to make up for the heartbreak of delay.
So in the spirit of experimentation I've decided to try it. I've been curious how well the wireless service would work in a house like mine. This will give me a no-risk way to find out.
