Okay, all the sff paperbacks are on shelves with their spines visible! Well, for certain values of "all."  I'm not counting the anthologies, but those will fit on the shelves downstairs in the den if I don't find a better place for them. And, most important, I'm not counting the probably THOUSANDS of books that Richard has hidden away in the den - many of them on shelves but probably not all of them. These are newer, bloated size paperbacks, mostly of a genre I have no interest in. So for the purposes of this project I'm pretending they don't exist, except for when I find little caches of books that I feel are longing to be reunited with their sisters in the back room (like all that Mercedes Lackey).

However, I am not satisfied with the way things are arranged: A's and B's in the hall, B's in the shelf by the attic step, C's and D's on the shelves in the middle of the office, and so on. I want them to flow logically from A-Z, and I'd rather not use so many of the hardback-sized shelves for paperbacks.

So ideally I will finish up this project by adding a new set of paperback shelves in the hall where the tipsy pile of books and comics used to be. Unfortunately, as far as I know, nobody actually sells paperback shelves. The best I can probably do is a much-too-deep cabinet with movable shelves (and preferably extra shelves for sale as piece parts). Width should be somewhere between 36-41" and height between 45" and 60". Ideally, depth would be no more than 6" but I don't think anybody sells shelves like that. Depth could be as much as 11-1/2" without exceeding the space. Richard has some in the den that more or less fill the bill (except that they are in use, of course). He thinks he got them at Menards. Anybody have any other suggestions?

ETA: It looks like the best bet is to search for DVD or "multi-media" storage units. I still find it mind-boggling that NOBODY makes shelves for paperback storage, but as far as I can tell that is in fact the case. And even compact DVD shelves are hard to come by. A CD/DVD case is less than 6" deep, but most of the storage systems have shelves that are 9.5" deep. Why??

But this one doesn't look too bad. The shelves are only 7" deep and adjustable and the whole unit is about the size I want. I'm more in the mood to just go out and BUY the shelves I want, put them together and finish this project. But if that is just impossible, I can order these.

I use these: http://www.amazon.com/Casual-Home-Folding-Stackable-Bookcase/dp/B0047T6K7C/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1404680813&sr=8-1&keywords=FOLDING+BOOKCASE

I use braces from a hardware store to stack them and make risers out of 1x4's so I can double-stack the paperbacks.

Seriously, for paperbacks? Oh, I see. You like double-stacking books. My whole goal in this project was to eliminate double-stacking.

Ikea has a pretty good web site. So you could look for your very specific requirements without having to go anywhere.

Yeah, right. Ikea is useless. All their shelves are either 2 or 4 feet wide - I need about 3 feet. And their shelves are all for hardback books, so way too deep and tall. I found a tip to look for DVD storage (about the right depth for paperbook books). Feel free to look on Ikea's site and tell me if you can find anything that remotely fits my space.

I bought a bunch of IKEA shelves for paperbacks. The default set is too high, but you can buy an extra shelf, and that makes it just the right height for paperbacks.

Doesn't solve the too-deep problem, though. We have all IKEA-style shelves (although few actually from IKEA) and they are all twice as deep as necessary, which wastes a serious amount of floor space. I bet that, even though they always provide a wall anchor so that it can't tip over, they realize that most people don't install the anchor, and so they set the depth for stability rather than intended contents.

One could, I suppose, buy an IKEA-style bookcase and then saw the front half off all the parts and drill new front shelf peg holes. As a bonus, this automatically provides extra shelves. But this probably isn't all that much easier than building a bookcase from scratch.

I actually have a fondness for the all-2x4 design. But I'm sick of building my own shelves from raw lumber. I just want a kit I can put together. Searching for "DVD storage shelves" seems to give the best results for shelves of the right size. I ordered thesefrom Amazon. They look perfect, except that according to the reviews I should have ordered them last year before they started manufacturing them in China. It looks like they make take a while to get here, so I'm going to move the anthologies downstairs and work on cleaning up the area where the new shelves will go.

When I ordered the shelves (yesterday) delivery date was estimated to be between July 23 and Aug 15! Today I got an email saying - surprise! Delivery date has been updated. They'll be here in 3 days.

I guess they found a set in a warehouse somewhere so they didn't have to ship them from China after all. Maybe I'll be double lucky and it will be one of the old American-made sets that were reportedly much better built. I guess I'll know in 3 days. Whee!
