God, it's nasty out there. Just above freezing, nothing happening except a chill breeze, and the very air is battleship gray. I hate this time of year.

It occurred to me today that I now have a dear old mother living in a Very. Sunny. Clime. I wonder if it's too late to start looking for Thanksgiving plane fares to Arizona. I've never flown at Thanksgiving - is it too crowded and expensive to be worth the trouble? Anybody got tips on flying home for Thanksgiving?

Airports tend to be crowded during Thanksgiving weekend, and this close to the holiday, it might be hard to find fares that are reasonable.

My Mom lives in Florida. Her birthday is in January. I always visit my Mom on her birthday. She is pleased, and I get out of Minnesota during the coldest part of the year. And by then, middle of January, the holiday rush is over.

Unless you are getting cabin fever already, think about getting an extra day or two off around Martin Luther King day, and going then. It will give you something to look forward to. And see if Sun Country or some other airline besides Northworst flies there. My tickets from Sun Country cost a good deal less than NWA. I decided on not to book NWA this year because the strike meant things were uncertain, and I keep hearing rumors of how bad they've gotten.

Another possibility is always Xmas, but the airports are crowded then as well. When's Hanukah this year?

No advice re: airfare, but I will say that I have very fond memories of the Thanksgiving we spent in Phoenix, Arizona (despite the fact the occasion we flew out there for was Rob's dad's death and funeral). Four days after Bob's death we had Thanksgiving dinner out on the sunny patio--and then went for a swim in the pool afterwards.

In recent memory, the past four years I think, I have flown twice near Thanksgiving. It wasn't that horrible. In fact David and I are doing it again this Thanksgiving. His family is all out of town.

I will say I just got emails from Travel Zoo saying that a bunch of airlines were having a holiday sale. Maybe they're having a low turn out for those days right now.

If you do go remember that you'll be waiting longer than normal and take stuff to do. I recommend travel Boggle.:)

If you aren't hung up on Tradition -- making you willing to fly on the actual Thursday Turkey Day -- you can often get a really good fare. Of course, then you have to get back home... which is cheaper if you can wait past Sunday (until, like, Tuesday).
