I just found an entire BOX of lightweight earphones, the kind that used to come with your Sony Walkman. Richard won't use the iPod because he doesn't like the little earbuds, so this was actual a useful discovery. I brushed off the dust, and tried each set of old earphones with my iPod. Two of the 6 headsets actually worked! So, for once, it seems to have been useful to save a pile of useless old gadgetry. Score one for the packrats.

Of course, some guys woulda thrown out the ones that didn't work before putting the box away in whatever "safe place" it has been moldering in for untold years. But that's probably analyzing a little too deeply. The question is: throw it away when you haven't used it for [your threshold here] years or save it?

The answer is: how much space do you have and how much other stuff to share it with?

Hey, you never know what you might need when the Great Zucchini Famine destroys civilization!

One could also assume that all 6 "might" have worked when they were packed away...

For some values of "work," I suppose. The ones that didn't get any sound at all were the ones with duct tape wrapped around various connection points. It's probably safe to assume that those were in at the very least shaky condition when they were tucked away.

It is hard to know what to do with no-longer-functional technology. They don't recycle it here in St.Paul. I've got a small collection I'd like to get rid of but don't know where to bring it.
